Solidarity with Striking Workers on Both Coasts

The Graduate Center chapter of the Professional Staff Congress offers our support and solidarity to our public university union comrades at the University of California (48,000 strong from UAW 2865, UAW 5810, and SRU-UAW) and our New York City union comrades at the New School (ACT-UAW 7902).

We condemn the administrations of the University of California and the New School for their obstinance, and we unconditionally support the demands of the workers for a fair wage and adequate working conditions. University bureaucrats should be ashamed of the pay and benefits that they give themselves while at the same time fighting to keep wages and benefits down for those doing the majority of the work at their schools. But these people know no shame, so we cannot expect them to just do what is right. Only expressions of worker power can force their hand, as UC and New School workers are showing us all right now.

We look forward to picketing with our comrades at the New School starting today. Though we cannot picket with our comrades across the country in California, we are with them in spirit and encourage everyone to sign their solidarity petition and/or donate to their strike fund.

Academic workers around the country are telling our universities that enough is enough! Solidarity to UC workers! Solidarity to New School workers!

Show your support here by signing the petition for UC workers and by attending a picket at the New School (hours are 8:30am-12:30pm and 3:30-7:30pm, but check the ACT-UAW 7902 Twitter for updates).
