The meeting began with coworkers sharing concerns and questions. Here are some of the things that came up:
- What’s happening in the country, to workers; how we are responding to the historical moment as a union and a community; how to protect our undocumented students; highlighting the work of the Immigrant Solidarity Working Group of the PSC; interest in holding a KYR session for immigrant rights at SLU; need for information of what could happen if ICE comes to SLU; need to protect our LGBTQ students and coworkers, especially trans; understanding how Trump’s cuts will affect CUNY, our enrollment; how do new rules about indirect costs affect us? As a labor/social justice school we should be the hub of these conversations about what’s going to happen with CUNY, unions
- Ongoing SLU issues: Staff Morale, moving Learning Hub to a proper space, closed office space for adjuncts, feeling safe on the 10th floor; security guards – how secure we are with these guards and their schedule
- School leadership having a pattern of not celebrating Black History Month (or Women’s History Month) – no communication to students and staff
We discussed the next Labor Management meeting, which will take place on Monday, March 17 2-4pm on zoom. All PSC members at SLU are encouraged to participate in the planning meeting on Friday, Feb. 28 1 pm planning meeting, and to attend the LM meeting itself. It’s our opportunity to bring our issues to management. There are several outstanding items from the last meeting. Management has not moved on creating a calendar for the school. What Everyone Needs to Know is supposed to come monthly but hasn’t come in a long time.
For staff colleagues, the next HEO chapter meeting is on Monday, February 24, 2025, 6:30pm-8:30pm on Zoom. Please register. The meeting will feature information about the new contract with Faye Moore, PSC Director of Contract Administration.
For everyone, the next Graduate Center chapter meeting is on Thursday, February 27, at 12. It is in person at the Graduate Center and on zoom.
The last part of the meeting was further discussion amongst ourselves. We talked about the KYR workshop at SLU that is in the works with Make the Road NY. Several coworkers attended the PSC Immigrant Solidarity Working Group meeting, which featured trainings with CUNY Law attorneys and a rapid response introduction. There was a discussion of what we could do at SLU and what would be most useful. There is a State Protections for Immigrant Students – What you should know training run by CUNY on February 20 at 4pm. Register here. The scholarship open to undocumented students at SLU remains unfunded. One coworker underscored that the way most CUNY students come into contact with ICE is not ICE raids on campus but interaction with the NYPD. In addition, with new rules about protests on campus, campus security enforcing those rules could be another way that our students are criminalized and come into contact with ICE. There were questions about who our security reports to and what kind of guidance they are getting.
Faculty are organizing a Black History Month event on February 27 at 4:30, featuring Kafui Attoh, in room 1425.
SLU has a union listserv. Check in with your coworkers to make sure they are on it!
