The People’s Hearing on Racism at CUNY was amazing!

For all of you who weren’t able to be with us on March 9, the People’s Hearing on Racism at CUNY was a powerful and beautiful experience. Over a hundred community members gathered to hear from, and think with, two incredible keynote speakers and panels about the interconnects between struggles against racism, Zionism, imperialism and austerity.

Audience members then had a chance to make comments and ask questions. Towards the end of the event, a Zionist interrupted CUNY activist Nerdeen Kiswani’s closing remarks by jumping up on the stage with a small plastic Israeli flag in his mouth. Organizers and members of the audience rushed to make sure Nerdeen was safe, and the entire auditorium proceeded to chant “Free, free Palestine,” “When people are colonized, resistance is justified,” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” The Zionist left when the event ended. There was no physical altercation.

After the event, audience members and speakers were invited upstairs to the People’s Commons where lively discussion, networking, and organizing continued over some food and drink.
